The staff is 6', and the 4x4 was some cheap Douglas fir I stained with walnut Danish oil.
This was a tentative effort I had little investment in. I felt there would be a point somewhere in the project where I'd abandon it and start a different one.

I drew, and kept re-drawing the lines along the length of the project to establish the stick.
I used a Merlin 2 chainsaw to hog out most of the wood, Foredom and Dremel tools for the rest...because I'm lazy.
The most difficult part of the job was burning scales and painting them.

Snake walking stick
I took a stab at making a snake walking stick like one of Mike Stinnett's.
I bought a 4x4 post and set to work on it (he uses found branches and logs).
I decided to make two snakes, a California King snake swallowing a rattlesnake.
