Mesquite IS hard..so is ironwood, most arizona desert trees are hard...but....the grains in all of them I have seen are beautiful....really good stuff to turn on a lathe! One that is not very hard and is carveable is Navajo willow, I have made several canes...

I drill holes in the end and gorilla glue wood dowels , it takes a little effort to make sure everything lines up so you don't spend the afternoon sanding trying to even the edges lol...a doweled joint is actually stronger than the natural wood....metal...

I bought some "Tree Tea Oil" from down under, took me a long time to figure out the smell, but its Camphor....I assume thats the same kind of tree you are trying to carve?...

Not a problem, if it gets loose, take a thin piece of paper cut to size to fit in the cover, put some elmers on the side next to the wood, usually one piece of paper is enough, if not, put one on the other side as well....works for ...

The trouble with magnetized covers....lay your knife down on your bench and when you pick it up, you will have all these little iron particles stuck to your knife....
